古人夫妇相敬如宾，传为美谈。夫妇之间，尚以相敬为难为美;一家之中，父母之于子，舅姑之于妇，及姑嫂妯娌之间，皆宜以&ldo;相敬如宾&rdo;为尚，明矣。家人妇子同居一家，&ldo;敬&rdo;字最难;不敬，则口角是非生焉矣。析居析产，所以重个人之人格也，俾不得以太亲近而生狎慢之心焉。而不远去，又不欲其过疏也，俾时得定省父母，以慰其迟暮之怀，有疾病死亡，又可相助也。

一二、还我青岛，日非无利

（八月十七日）

昨记吾所料日人将以青岛归中国。今晨读报，知日政府昨夜以《哀的米敦书》致德政府，要求二事，其第二事即令德政府以胶州租借地全境交与日政府，以为他日交还中国之计。吾所料中矣。但不知日政府之能践言否，又不知其所欲交换之条件如何耳。

吾之为&ldo;日本还我青岛&rdo;之想也，初非无据而言。他日世界之竞争，当在黄白两种。黄种今惟日本能自立耳。然日人孤立，安能持久?中国者，日之屏蔽也。藩篱之撤，日之所患，今日之政治家如大隈已有亲华之趋向（参看大隈《第三次东方平和论》，见《东方杂志》）。然日人侵略之野心，早为世界所侧视，中美之人尤疑之。日人果欲消除中国疑忌之心及世界嫉妒之心，决非空言所能为力。何则?历史之往事（如中日之役）早深入人心矣。青岛之地，本非日有，日人得之，适足以招英人之忌。而又不甘以之让英、法。何则?英、法之厚，日之薄也。若为吾华取还青岛，则有数利焉：（一）可以交欢中国;（二）可以自告于世界，示其无略地之野心;（三）可以释英人之忌。吾所见如此，此吾政治上之乐观也，吾何恤人之笑吾痴妄也?
